As a child, our director, Mary Anne Grosch, wanted to be a teacher. This desire was very strong, and having graduated from college with a degree in Fine Art and English, the longing did not go away. While teaching Sunday School, she met a mom whose child was in a home-based Montessori program. This led to an observation that left her mesmerized! At first glance, it looked ridiculous to see children spooning beans from one bowl to another. As time passed, she was amazed at the children building a broad stair and laying out math problems to be solved with the golden beads, and she made the decision then and there to pursue Montessori certification. Having been certified in The Spalding Method of Phonics, she knew Montessori was the path for her, and the Spalding program would fit in nicely. After adopting a child from Bulgaria, she began using Classical Conversations to teach her child. This fits in beautifully in a Montessori environment because it involves singing and chants, which are repetitive each week, along with being quick and easy. The children sing at different times of the day to learn certain disciplines, such as the days of the week, months of the year, and continents. Applying all of her knowledge from certifications, classes, and conferences gives this teacher a plethora of teaching ideas and activities to share with the children.
